Isla Fisher is opening up about her separation from Sacha Baron Cohen. In an interview published on Feb. 8, the actress, who shares three children—Olive, 17, Elula, 14, and Montgomery, 9—with the British comedian, described the end of their marriage as “the most difficult thing I’ve been through.”
“I’ve learned so much about myself in the process,” Fisher, 49, shared, adding, “I never imagined my family being separated, but we are committed and loving parents.”
Despite the shift in their relationship, Fisher emphasized that she and Cohen, 53, remain devoted to prioritizing their children.
“Kids are the most important thing, and you want them to really feel safe and loved. We are building a new, healthy version of what our family looks like and putting as much care and love into it as possible,” she told the outlet.
Elsewhere in the interview, the Wedding Crashers star credited her close female friendships for helping her navigate the challenges of the breakup. She also reflected on gaining a deeper understanding of herself outside of a romantic relationship.
“The women in my life have held me… the female relationships that I cultivated in our business, those women have been there for me. I’m actually going to get emotional,” Fisher admitted.
She continued: “I’m sitting here today because of them. I’ve learned so much about the power of female friendship, and I’ve realized that I do have resilience, that I know who I am outside of a partnership, and that I understand my values. It’s been an expansive learning curve.”
Fisher, who was born in Australia, first met Cohen in 2001 at a party in Sydney.
During an interview with The New York Times in October 2020, Cohen recalled that he “knew instantly” he had feelings for Fisher. “She was hilarious. We were at a very pretentious party, and me and her bonded over making fun of the other people there,” he said.
After three years of dating, the couple got engaged in 2004 and married in 2010. They announced their separation on April 5, 2024, in a joint statement shared on their Instagram Stories.
“After a long tennis match lasting over twenty years, we are finally putting our racquets down. In 2023 we jointly filed to end our marriage,” they wrote, accompanying the message with a photo of themselves in matching tennis outfits.
Looking ahead, Fisher—who recently wrapped filming on Now You See Me 3 and will star in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (premiering Feb. 14)—expressed excitement about taking on new opportunities.
“I’m trying to readdress my ambition, refocus, and get reinspired for my career,” she told.
Up next, she will begin filming the female-led comedy Spa Weekend alongside Anna Faris and Leslie Mann. “I cannot wait,” Fisher said of the upcoming project.
