James Corden has quashed rumors regarding new Gavin and Stacey content, revealing that a final episode of the beloved show is set to air on Christmas Day.
Taking to Instagram, the former talk show host declared,
“It’s official! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey.”
He further stated,
“See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James.”
This announcement solidifies that the episode has been penned alongside co-creator Ruth Jones, who portrays a character in an on-screen relationship with Corden’s in the series.
According to a report from Deadline in February, the new episode is expected to feature most members of the original cast, including Matthew Horne and Joanna Page reprising their roles as Essex lad Gavin and his Welsh partner Stacey.
Also anticipated to make a return are Rob Brydon as Stacey’s uncle Bryn, and Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb portraying Gavin’s parents Pamela and Mick.
These beloved characters were last seen in 2019 during another Christmas special. The episode, the first in nine years, concluded with a cliff-hanger as Nessa (Ruth Jones) proposed to Smithy (James Corden).
Fans eagerly anticipate discovering the fate of Nessa and Smithy’s relationship and catching up on the wellbeing of their on-screen son, “Neil the Baby”, portrayed by Noel Edmond Smith.
The impending final episode of Gavin and Stacey carries a bittersweet sentiment for viewers. The 2019 Christmas special, which left audiences hanging, became the most-watched show in a decade, drawing in over 17 million viewers.
Originally airing for three series between 2007 and 2010, the sitcom began its journey on BBC Three before swiftly moving to BBC One.
Set in both Essex and Wales, Gavin and Stacey has achieved cult classic status, despite initially winning only a few awards—two Bafta TV awards in 2008 and one National Television Award in 2010.
However, its impact endured, evidenced by winning a Must-See Moment Bafta in 2020, voted for by the public, for the memorable scene of Nessa’s proposal.
In recognition of its enduring legacy in the comedy genre, the show received an impact award at the National Television Awards in 2020.
