Be cautious about who you invite to live with you—that’s the unsettling lesson from Single White Female, the 1992 psychosexual thriller that remains a staple of suspenseful cinema.
The film follows Bridget Fonda as a newly single Manhattan woman who, in the aftermath of a breakup, unwittingly welcomes an overly attached and socially awkward roommate, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Now, because Hollywood thrives on reimagining cult classics, Sony and Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures are reviving the story, with Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell currently in negotiations to star in the remake.
There’s no word yet on who will direct the new adaptation, but the original was helmed by Barbet Schroeder, known for Reversal of Fortune.
Ortega has become one of the most sought-after young stars in Hollywood, best known for leading Netflix’s Wednesday. She solidified her box office appeal with a role in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024).
Up next, she stars in Death of a Unicorn, a horror comedy that premiered at SXSW and is set for theatrical release this month.
She also has Hurry Up Tomorrow, a thriller featuring The Weeknd and Barry Keoghan, and is slated to appear in Taika Waititi’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Klara and the Sun, alongside Amy Adams.
Russell has also earned widespread acclaim for her performances, particularly in Trey Edward Shults’ Waves and Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All.
She previously starred in Netflix’s reboot of Lost in Space. Her upcoming projects include Hope, a sci-fi thriller, and a new adaptation of The Thomas Crown Affair, where she’ll star opposite Michael B. Jordan.
Upon its release, the original Single White Female was a commercial success, grossing $84.1 million against a $16 million budget. News of Ortega and Russell’s involvement in the remake was first reported.
