Jeremy Allen White has joined the upcoming Star Wars film The Mandalorian & Grogu as the voice of Rotta the Hutt, Jabba the Hutt’s son. This marks White’s first major franchise role since his Emmy-winning breakthrough in the FX series The Bear.
Details about the plot of The Mandalorian & Grogu have remained scarce, making White’s casting as Jabba’s son the first significant insight into what might be in store for the titular bounty hunter and his endearing adopted child.
The Disney+ series The Mandalorian is set in the years following the events of 1983’s Return of the Jedi, in which Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) kills Jabba by strangling him.
The spin-off The Book of Boba Fett recently explored how Jabba’s absence created a power vacuum among the crime lords of Tatooine.
Two of Jabba’s cousins made moves to claim his territory but were ultimately defeated by Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), who took control instead.
With Jabba’s son now involved in The Mandalorian & Grogu, it is likely that Boba Fett and his ally Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) could make an appearance in the new film.
White is currently working on the Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere with writer-director Scott Cooper. He first gained attention for his role as Philip “Lip” Gallagher in the long-running Showtime series Shameless.
However, his role in The Bear as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, a New York City chef who returns to Chicago to run his late brother’s restaurant, cemented his status as a star and earned him back-to-back Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG awards.
The The Mandalorian & Grogu project is being directed by The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau from a screenplay he co-wrote with Dave Filoni (Ahsoka).
The film will feature Pedro Pascal reprising his role as Din Djarin (Mando) and Sigourney Weaver in an undisclosed role. The Mandalorian & Grogu is scheduled to premiere on May 22, 2026, and will mark the first Star Wars feature film since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
