Johnny Depp’s 22-year-old son, Jack, has been pursuing a different path from his father’s career in acting by working as a bartender in Paris.
Edouard Chueke, the owner of the Lebanese restaurant L’Area in Paris, shared on Saturday, December 7, that Jack has been working both behind the bar and in the establishment’s downstairs kitchen. Chueke praised Jack’s character, noting his preference for staying out of the spotlight.
“Jack is a great guy. He keeps out of the limelight, but worked here behind the bar and in the kitchen,” Chueke told the outlet.
Jack had worked at the restaurant quietly for two years before leaving recently. Chueke mentioned that he left a few months ago but expressed optimism about his return in the future. “Good staff are hard to find,” he added.
Chueke also noted that Jack’s mother, Vanessa Paradis, and his sister, Lily-Rose Depp, were frequent visitors to the restaurant during his time there. He shared, “Lily was mixing caipirinhas behind the bar and really getting into the swing of it, she was enjoying herself.”
Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, who were together for 14 years, welcomed their two children—Lily-Rose, 25, and Jack—during their relationship. The pair first met in 1998 while Depp was filming The Ninth Gate. Although they never married, Depp previously explained his perspective on marriage in a 2010 interview with Extra.
“I never found myself needing that piece of paper. Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don’t need somebody to say, ‘OK, you’re married,’” Depp shared at the time.
He added with a lighthearted remark, “If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not. But the thing is, I’d be so scared of ruining her last name! She’s got such a good last name.”
Paradis has previously addressed her and Depp’s decision to raise their children near her hometown in France rather than in Los Angeles.
In a 2007 interview, she explained the choice: “For my children, I secretly choose France. Even though Los Angeles is great, too. Only, in the south of France, you can live much more anonymously. And that’s a bliss, especially when the children are still young.”
While Lily-Rose has pursued a successful career in acting and modeling, Jack has shown no real interest in following the same path. In a 2014 interview, Depp himself confirmed his son’s preferences: “Aside from school plays and things, he hasn’t shown any desire to become an actor.”
Lily-Rose offered some rare insight into her relationship with Jack earlier this month during a conversation with Natalie Portman for Interview magazine. Reflecting on their shared love for Dracula, she called her younger brother “the coolest person ever” while discussing her role in Nosferatu.
“This one in particular was big for me, because my brother and I both were super obsessed with Dracula when we were younger. My brother used to dress up like Dracula when he was a kid for school,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Wow, if I get this part my brother’s going to finally think I’m cool.’”
She continued, “It’s the classic thing of when you have a younger sibling, they think you’re so cool when you’re kids, and then when you get older, now I think he’s so cool, and I’m like, ‘Let’s hang!’ And he’s like, ‘I’m busy.’ But yeah, I think I got some points with this one.”
