Kathryn Hahn has reflected on her journey as Agatha Harkness in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), hinting at a farewell—at least for now—to her role as the fan-favorite witch.
Agatha All Along, her solo series, debuted on Disney+ in September and October, concluding with Agatha Harkness in an unexpected place: a ghost in the MCU.
Since her acclaimed introduction in 2021’s WandaVision, Hahn revealed the character to new heights of magic and mischief in her standalone story.
With its mix of spellbinding action and catchy, chart-topping music, Agatha All Along left fans clamoring for more of the villainous enchantress. However, given the MCU’s packed schedule, finding the right moment for Agatha’s return poses a challenge.
Kathryn Hahn on Saying Goodbye to Agatha
In an interview, Hahn reflected on her role and her character’s end. Discussing Agatha’s connection to Billy Maximoff, portrayed by Joe Locke, she expressed hope that Agatha could provide Billy with the guidance she couldn’t offer her own son, Nicholas Scratch, revealed in Episode 8 of the series.
“Even though obviously now Billy/Wiccan is not her son, there is some sort of hope for her that she’s able to maybe do for him what she couldn’t do for Nicky,” Hahn shared.
“I think they do make a great team. Of course, I love this part, and I love Joe Locke madly, and we’ll see what the future holds. In my mind, this was a beautiful and satisfying way to say goodbye to this incredible character I had to play.”
Despite the apparent farewell, Hahn’s affection for Agatha is undeniable. She credited the character with rekindling her passion for acting:
“By the end of the show, I would go into hair and makeup at the end of the day and be like, ‘Well, this is my last acting job,’ because I felt like I had a chance to do it all.
But it really just reopened my hunger and love for performing. I do feel like this is exactly the part I’m supposed to play at this period of my life.”
The Radical End of Agatha All Along
Reflecting on the series’ end, Hahn noted the pride she and her team felt in delivering an ending that was both “subversive and radical” for a Marvel show, as it focused on an intimate and tender narrative rather than a massive spectacle.
“But I do know how proud we are of it and how subversive and radical it felt to have an ending, especially a big Marvel show, be that small and tender and have this little beating heart,” she explained.
A Witch’s Potential Future in the MCU
Hahn has addressed the possibility of Agatha crossing over into the MCU’s movie space. Speaking with Rolling Stone, she expressed openness to reprising her role but suggested it would only happen if her character’s involvement were truly essential and compelling.
“I think I’d only be asked if it was necessary and juicy. So, who knows? The craziest, most perfect, side-door entrance to this world is to be a witch. It feels wicked stepsister-y. And I really like it like that.”
Similarly, during a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hahn acknowledged the potential fun in dropping a witch like Agatha into any part of the MCU:
“I think the witches are a really great… a really great, great way in anywhere. That’s why, when it was a witch that I was proposed to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I was like… It really felt wicked stepsister-y, like we were getting away with something. But I do think there would be a lot of potential fun in just dropping a witch into any grouping.”
Will Kathryn Hahn Return as Agatha?
While Agatha All Along may mark a temporary end for Hahn’s character, fans remain hopeful this won’t be the last of the game-changing witch. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer has teased the possibility of a second season, suggesting there may still be untold chapters in Agatha’s story.
In the MCU’s universe, being a ghost doesn’t mean the end, especially given how comic book logic often defies death.
Wanda Maximoff was confirmed dead in Agatha All Along, but many fans are convinced she’ll return, paving the way for a potential reunion or crossover with Agatha.
Agatha’s ghostly state creates a unique narrative challenge, but she still has a mission to help Billy Maximoff.
Episode 9 hinted at a future storyline involving a search for a reincarnated Tommy Maximoff, which could contribute to the larger arc of assembling the MCU’s Young Avengers. While Agatha likely wouldn’t join the team, her role in that reunion seems significant.
With the MCU building toward massive crossover events like Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to be the biggest event in the franchise’s history, Agatha could easily reenter the storyline.
Such events may also serve as a platform for Wanda’s return, allowing Elizabeth Olsen to rejoin the narrative.
For now, Hahn’s performance as Agatha remains a standout, and fans eagerly anticipate what mischief she might bring in the future. All nine episodes of Agatha All Along are now streaming on Disney+.
