Amy Schumer takes center stage as a mom-to-be—sort of—in the new trailer for Netflix’s R-rated comedy Kinda Pregnant.
In the film, Schumer stars as Lainy Newton, a newly single teacher with dreams of becoming a mother.
Her aspirations are complicated when she learns her best friend, Kate (Jillian Bell), is pregnant, sparking jealousy that leads Lainy to tell a rather bold lie.
She dons a fake baby bump and pretends to be pregnant, a ruse further complicated when she meets her dream man (Will Forte) while maintaining the charade.
“Do you ever tell, like, such a big lie you don’t know how to get out of it?” Lainy asks in the trailer, showcasing her commitment to the deception.
Balancing the “gestation” of her faux pregnancy and her budding romance with Forte’s character, Lainy dives deeper into the fabrication.
As Lainy gets closer to Forte’s character, their banter adds comedic charm. When Lainy asks if he’s ever dated someone pregnant, he quips, “You’re the least pregnant person I’ve ever dated. I want them to be, like, two weeks away from dropping.”
Meanwhile, Lainy’s baby bump endures a series of comedic mishaps. She drops into splits at a nightclub, face-plants during a yoga session, and even manages to accidentally ignite a flame on her faux belly.
Among her circle, only one confidant, a coworker played by comedian Urzila Carlson, knows the truth.
Carlson’s character doesn’t hold back, exclaiming, “How dare you walk around with that fake fucking belly? What if someone you know catches you?”
Viewers will see how Lainy’s story unfolds when Kinda Pregnant premieres on Netflix on February 5. Directed by Tyler Spindel, nephew of Adam Sandler, the film was produced by Sandler’s company, Happy Madison.
The ensemble cast includes Damon Wayans Jr., Brianne Howey, Alex Moffat, Joel David Moore, and Lizze Broadway.
Schumer first rose to fame with the 2015 comedy Trainwreck, a box-office hit, and later starred in Snatched (2017) alongside Goldie Hawn and I Feel Pretty (2018) with Michelle Williams.
On television, she created multiple shows, including the Emmy-winning sketch series Inside Amy Schumer, Food Network’s Amy Schumer Learns to Cook, and the documentary Expecting Amy, which chronicled her real-life pregnancy struggles.
Most recently, she starred in Hulu’s Life & Beth, which ran for two seasons.
Schumer has also explored voice acting in John Krasinski’s family-friendly IF and played a small part in Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story. Kinda Pregnant marks her return to a leading film role since I Feel Pretty.
“I’m striving for it to be one of the 10 funniest movies of my lifetime,” Schumer shared about Kinda Pregnant, which she also co-wrote. “I think it’s going to be as funny as Trainwreck.”
