Michael J. Fox and fellow cast members from the iconic 1985 film Back to the Future have launched a public appeal to locate the red Gibson ES-345 Cherry Red guitar famously played by Fox’s character, Marty McFly. The guitar was featured in a standout scene where McFly impresses a 1950s high school audience with his electrifying performance, blending rock ‘n’ roll with futuristic flair.
The instrument went missing after filming concluded, and its whereabouts have remained unknown ever since. In a lighthearted video, Fox joked that the guitar might be “lost in the space-time continuum” or sitting in “some Teamster’s garage.” The humorous tone underscores the mystery surrounding the guitar’s disappearance while rekindling fans’ nostalgia for the film.

Cast and Musicians Rally Public to Help Find Marty McFly’s Iconic Red Guitar
Several other cast members, including Lea Thompson, Christopher Lloyd, and Harry Waters Jr., joined the campaign to recover the lost guitar. Musician Huey Lewis, whose song “The Power of Love” was part of the film’s iconic soundtrack, also lent his support. Their collective involvement has generated renewed interest in the beloved movie and the story behind its missing prop.
To aid in the search, Gibson is producing a documentary titled Lost to the Future and has announced plans to reissue the ES-345 Cherry Red guitar in October. The company is encouraging the public to share any leads through its website or a designated phone number, turning the hunt into a community-driven effort.
