Less than a day after Warner Bros. announced they were delaying the release of Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film to late September—fueling speculation that the move was aimed at positioning Leonardo DiCaprio for a second Oscar—a first trailer for One Battle After Another has been released.
The brief teaser focuses on DiCaprio and co-star Teyana Taylor, who are shown intensely practicing gun combat.
With a reported $140 million production budget, One Battle After Another is Anderson’s most expensive project to date.
The film is inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland, a postmodern work that follows characters in 1984 California as they flash back to the 1960s. This marks Anderson’s second adaptation of Pynchon’s writing, following 2014’s Inherent Vice.
The cast includes Benicio Del Toro, who previously starred in Inherent Vice, as well as Licorice Pizza alums Alana Haim and Sean Penn.
For DiCaprio, this marks his first film since Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon in 2023. The actor previously won the Best Actor Oscar in 2015 for The Revenant.
