Australia’s foreign affairs minister Penny Wong and Sophie Allouache have married after almost twenty years together. The wedding took place in Adelaide on Saturday, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other senior ministers in attendance. The couple’s daughters, Alexandra, 11, and Hannah, 8, served as flower girls.
“We are delighted that so many of our family and friends could share this special day with us,” Wong posted to Instagram.
Parliamentary colleague Michelle Rowland extended her congratulations to the couple, remarking,
“You both look absolutely gorgeous.”
Having entered federal parliament in 2002, Penny Wong recently achieved a historic milestone as Australia’s longest-serving female cabinet minister.
Initially aligning with the Labor stance by publicly opposing same-sex marriage, Wong later became one of its most vocal advocates.
During the pivotal parliamentary debate in 2017 to legalize same-sex marriage, the senator paid homage to her partner Sophie and their daughters.
“This is the most personal of debates because it is about the people who matter most to us,” she said.
