It’s been a while since there’s been any major news regarding the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved 90s film Practical Magic. First announced last summer, the sequel will be based on the follow-up novel The Book of Magic by Alice Hoffman.
Original stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are set to reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens. However, after the recent changes at Warner Bros., where the film is being produced, some fans have been left wondering if the sequel is still on track.
According to a recent report, Practical Magic 2 is indeed still happening, despite the departures of Worldwide Marketing President Josh Goldstine and International Theatrical Distribution President Andrew Cripps.
The report also mentioned various high-profile projects, including The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, DC’s Clayface, and Supergirl.
While some Hollywood decisions often leave audiences scratching their heads, the Practical Magic sequel still appears to have enough key players to keep the project moving forward at Warner Bros.
The movie’s original screenwriter, Akiva Goldsman, is returning to pen the script, and the original producer, Denise Di Novi, is also involved.
Last year, Di Novi shared with EW that, “We’re not going to reinvent the wheel. We’re going to draw from Alice Hoffman’s books, as the first movie did, and we’re going to be true to the chronology of how many years later it is.”
What Can We Expect From Practical Magic 2?
For this writer, as long as the midnight margaritas make a comeback, the sequel has the potential to honor the original film’s spirit.
It’s been confirmed that Practical Magic 2 will incorporate elements from The Book of Magic, and the focus will remain on the Owens family, whose generational curse was broken by Sally and Gillian in the 1998 film.
The plot of The Book of Magic also involves a now-adult Kylie Owens, played by Evan Rachel Wood in the first film, who must find a way to solve the curse after her boyfriend falls into a coma.
With Goldsman handling the script and Hoffman’s support, the sequel appears to be in capable hands, provided the project stays on course with Warner Bros.
As for the return of other cast members, no official announcements have been made yet. However, Di Novi’s statement about being “true to the chronology of how many years later it is” suggests that there is a strong possibility Evan Rachel Wood will reprise her role as an adult Kylie Owens.
Additionally, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, who played the beloved Aunt Frances and Aunt Jet, could very well return to continue their roles as the meddling yet wise aunts who guide the Owens family.
Practical Magic is not available for streaming with a subscription, but it can be rented through Prime Video.
