Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are continuing to hint at a potential third season of *Big Little Lies*. In an interview with *Vanity Fair*, the duo discussed their ongoing conversations about the direction they envision for their characters in a possible new season.
“I get the ring ring: ‘Hey, is [season 3] happening?’ Like, Nic,” Witherspoon said to Kidman. “You got excited.” “I got excited,” Kidman confirmed.
“It’s OK, baby. I get excited too. Then I’ve got Laura [Dern] calling me and Zoe [Kravitz] and Shailene [Woodley]. They’re all like, ‘Nic said that we’re making *Big Little Lies* season three?’” Witherspoon added, noting that the rest of their co-stars were also curious about the show’s future.
Kidman then hinted that a third season is indeed in the works. “But we are now! We’re moving fast and furious, and Liane [Moriarty] is delivering the book,” she revealed. “Yeah, and we’re in good shape.”
After her earlier comments about season three sparked widespread excitement, Kidman humorously suggested that they should keep quiet in the future.
She explained, “There’s this whole thing that you should never talk about something until you’ve done it. If you talk about doing it, it’s the dopamine hit of doing it. You feel like you’ve done it.”
Witherspoon agreed with Kidman’s sentiments, sharing her own perspective. “Well, I have a rule. It’s called, ‘Don’t be full of shit,’” she said, laughing.
“It’s called ‘The No-BS Rule in Hollywood,’ because how many people tell you they’re doing X, Y, Z, X, Y, Z? It’s like, ‘I don’t want to talk about it until I’m standing in the costume on the set.’
Then I will confirm to you that it’s happening. It’s really hard to stop it once you’re standing on set in costume.” Witherspoon and Kidman had an idea for a third season and planned to formally pitch it to HBO.
Kidman explained that after the second season’s release in 2019, they needed time to consider what stories to tell next.
“There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives — because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating,” Kidman said.
The cast, including Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz, remains closely connected. Kidman emphasized that their strong bond makes it easier to coordinate schedules and work together again.
“I think when you’re all scattered and never sort of cross paths, it’s very, very different,” she said. “But when you’re all still very intertwined, that’s what makes it doable, because there’s a willingness, and you want to spend time together.”
The first season of the series was based on Liane Moriarty’s best-seller and created and written by producer David E. Kelley. Premiering in 2017, the show won eight Emmys, including Best Limited Series.
