A fourth Meet the Parents film was first reported to be in development back in December, with most of the original cast in talks to return.
Now, Robert De Niro has officially confirmed his involvement, announcing the news on Wednesday’s episode of The View.
Host Sara Haines, a longtime Meet the Parents fan, took the opportunity to ask De Niro directly, “Will you be involved?”
“Yes,” De Niro replied simply.
De Niro did not reveal any additional details about the plot. However, alongside his return, it was previously reported that Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, and Blythe Danner are also in talks to reprise their roles.
John Hamburg, who wrote the screenplays for the previous three films, is set to return as the writer once again.
Jane Rosenthal and De Niro will produce through Tribeca Enterprises, while Stiller and John Lesher will produce under Red Hour Films. Additionally, Meet the Parents director Jay Roach will produce through Delirious Media.
Universal’s EVP of Production Development Matt Reilly and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garrell will oversee the project.
While Haines didn’t press for spoilers about the new film, she did take a moment to revisit the first Meet the Parents, asking De Niro about the iconic lie detector scene—something he recently discussed.
“Yes, I got it from somebody I knew who was in the CIA,” De Niro explained. “And then I thought this is very interesting, maybe this is something we could do.”
