Bong Joon Ho fans will have to wait a bit longer to see his highly anticipated follow-up to “Parasite.” Warner Bros. has shifted the release date for the Robert Pattinson-led sci-fi film “Mickey 17” to April 18, 2025, moving it three months later than its previous release date of January 31, 2025.
This new release date allows “Mickey 17” to be shown in IMAX and aims to attract audiences over the Easter holiday.
Originally, the date was set for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” by director Antoine Fuqua, which was supposed to debut on April 18 and take up IMAX and premium large-format screens.
However, Lionsgate recently moved “Michael” to October 3, opening up the slot and leading Warner Bros. to reschedule “Mickey 17” for April.
“When the April 18 date became available, we quickly moved to secure it for ‘Mickey 17,’” a Warner Bros. spokesperson said in a statement. “We’re thrilled with the new date, and very happy the film will be available to audiences in IMAX.”
With “Mickey 17” vacating its January slot, Warner Bros. and New Line decided to shift their film “Companion” to January 31, which was previously set for release three weeks earlier, on January 10.
“With January 31 now available with a full IMAX footprint, we are also very happy to have ‘Companion’ releasing on this new date,” the spokesperson added.
This isn’t the first time “Mickey 17” has been delayed. Originally set for March 29, 2024, the film was first pushed back to 2025 to allow more time for its completion, as last year’s strikes and other production issues caused delays.
Studio sources indicate that the new April date is a vote of confidence in Bong, following positive responses to the film’s first trailer, which premiered in September.
The sci-fi thriller “Mickey 17,” based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel “Mickey7,” stars Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an “expendable” employee assigned to perilous missions on an ice planet as part of a colonization effort.
When one version of Mickey dies, a duplicate is created, retaining most of his memories. The film’s cast also includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.
