Tennis legend Roger Federer is enjoying his life off the court. The former world No. 1 player, who retired in 2022, has experienced a “smooth” transition into retirement and is content being a devoted father to his four children with his wife, Mirka.
“Retirement is great. It was smooth,” Federer, 42, said in an interview with *Extra* at the premiere of his new documentary, *Federer: Twelve Final Days*, on Monday, June 10.
“It’s been really smooth. Super happy in my life. We have four beautiful children. There are twin boys who are 10, twin girls who are 14, and of course my wife,” he continued.
“We’ve been traveling around the world, having the best time, helping the kids with school, and taking on projects like this one. So, I’m keeping busy with that, and it’s been wonderful.”
Although Federer officially retired following the Laver Cup in September 2022, he had already started preparing for life after tennis due to undergoing two knee surgeries in 2020 and 2021, which sidelined him for much of his final years as a professional player.
“I had a bit of unfortunate luck with my knee. It was getting worse and worse, so I got a sense of what life would be like once I retired, spending more time at home and so forth,” the Swiss player explained.
In his new documentary, which chronicles the end of Federer’s illustrious career, the star becomes emotional when reflecting on life after the sport, according to *Extra*.
“I always felt that my career could end with any injury — and it’s only tennis, I always tried to remind myself,” Federer said at the premiere.
“Every time I won a match or a tournament, especially a tournament, I knew it could be my last. So, you always have to live with the mindset that one day you’ll be home and not be a tennis player anymore,” he added.
“You will only be a former tennis player. And I think that mindset helped me not worry too much about life after tennis. It’s been a great transition. I’m very happy, and I’m glad it unfolded the way it was meant to for me.”
