Ben Affleck’s action-packed 2016 thriller The Accountant is making its long-awaited return with a high-stakes sequel.
On Thursday, Feb. 13, Amazon MGM Studios released the first trailer for The Accountant 2, featuring Affleck reprising his role as Christian Wolff alongside Jon Bernthal, who returns as his brother Brax.
According to the official synopsis, “Christian Wolff has a talent for solving complex problems. When an old acquaintance is murdered, leaving behind a cryptic message to ‘find the accountant,’ Wolff is compelled to solve the case.”
“Realizing that more extreme measures are necessary, Wolff enlists his estranged and highly lethal brother Brax to assist him.
Alongside U.S. Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), they uncover a deadly conspiracy, making them targets of a ruthless network of killers determined to keep their secrets buried.”
The Accountant’s Story Continues
The original film explored Christian’s upbringing and his fractured relationship with Brax. Bernthal’s character appeared as a hitman throughout the film, only for his true identity as Christian’s brother to be revealed in the climactic moments.
While The Accountant featured a star-studded cast including Anna Kendrick, Jeffrey Tambor, Jean Smart, and John Lithgow, these actors will not return for the sequel.
However, J.K. Simmons reprises his role as Ray King, the director of the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Bureau.
Behind the Scenes and Release Details
Produced by Affleck and Matt Damon through their production company Artists Equity, The Accountant 2 is directed by Gavin O’Connor and written by Bill Dubuque, the creative duo behind the first film.
The sequel will make its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival on March 8 before hitting theaters on April 25.
