Following the successful debut of the first half of The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 on April 6, which concluded on June 22, the second half premiered on October 5. International viewers catch the series Crunchyroll, except in Asia.
Also, the previous anime project in the franchise was a three-episode OAD titled “The Ancient Magus’ Bride – The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm,” accompanying the 16th, 17th, and 18th manga volumes.
Based on the manga, written and illustrated by Kore Yamazaki, The Ancient Magus’ Bride is not shy of including socially disagreed upon concepts. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a good series. Not suited for a new anime watcher, this show caters mostly to enthusiasts who are well-versed in the anime world.
The Ancient Magus’ Bride’s Clean Ending Sequence
The production team of the second season of The Ancient Magus’ Bride anime has shared the clean, credit-less ending animation sequence for the latter part of the season. This new segment features Yuyu’s ending theme song, “fam.” The season animates the “Gakuin” (College) arc of Kore Yamazaki’s manga, which commenced in May 2018.
The franchise’s recent addition, The Ancient Magus’ Bride – The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm OAD project, consisted of three episodes bundled with limited editions of manga volumes. Released with the 16th, 17th, and 18th manga volumes in 2021 and 2022, this OAD series marks the “first part” of a new anime project.
Crunchyroll is now streaming it globally, except in Asia. This installment follows a successful television anime season in 2017, which was available on Crunchyroll with Japanese audio and English subtitles, alongside an English dub by Funimation.
Additionally, fans enjoyed a prequel original video anime (OVA) titled The Ancient Magus’ Bride: Those Awaiting a Star in 2017, all of which was later released on home video by Funimation in 2019.
The Staff
The second season of The Ancient Magus’ Bride is directed by Kazuaki Terasawa and produced by Studio Kafka, an animation studio established specifically for the OAD project. The scripts are written by Aya Takaha, Yoko Yonaiyama, and Chiaki Nishinaka. The character designs are handled by Hirotaka Katō, and the music is composed by Junichi Matsumoto.
The manga’s journey began in 2013 in Mag Garden’s Monthly Comic Blade magazine but found its true home in Monthly Comic Garden after the former stopped publication in 2014. With more than 10 million copies in circulation, it’s safe to say the manga was successful.
The Plot of the Second Season
In The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2, Chise finds the strength to embrace both Elias and her own identity amid the uncertainties of her circumstances. With Cartaphilus’s temporary slumber, she resumes her normal life until a call from the mage association, the College, interrupts her routine.
Beneath the British Library lies a society of mages, and as Chise’s encounters unfold, new avenues begin to emerge. This season portrays the journey of self-preservation as a path to rescuing others, all while unveiling the mysteries that lie within and beyond.
This romantic supernatural slice-of-life series dives into an engaging narrative, exploring Chise’s experiences and emotions within her newfound place, a place she must learn to call home. The heart of the story lies in the intricate relationship between Chise and Elias.
Their dynamic evolves from that of abandonment to love to something much deeper and profound, with themes of identity, belonging, and the healing power of companionship.
With an 8.6 score on My Anime List, The Ancient Magus’ Bride has received mixed feelings irrespective of its high score. Though the first season fell short, unable to deliver a strong start, viewers keep faith in this series’ potential.
