The Chronicles of Narnia Film Getting A Full Theatrical Release After Netflix Debut

The Chronicles of Narnia Film

Following the unprecedented success of Barbie, fans are eagerly awaiting Greta Gerwig’s interpretation of The Chronicles of Narnia, a project backed by Netflix.

While details about the film remain largely under wraps, the release plans for this highly anticipated fantasy movie have surfaced, courtesy of Puck News.

According to the report, the movie will debut in theaters on Thanksgiving Day 2026, with screenings in 1,000 IMAX theaters worldwide.

It will not be available for streaming on Netflix until Christmas 2026, making it a hybrid theatrical-Netflix release—a strategy typically reserved for the streamer’s awards contenders.

Additionally, Netflix has committed to marketing the IMAX release as a major theatrical event. Gerwig plans to use both IMAX and traditional cameras for the dual release, which will be available in 90 countries.

This marketing push follows the cultural phenomenon of Barbie, and Netflix is hoping to replicate that level of excitement with Gerwig’s next project, which has the potential to become a major franchise for the platform.

What Is Greta Gerwig’s The Chronicles of Narnia About?

While the plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, Gerwig has described the film as a blend of various traditions, which suits her directorial style, especially considering Barbie’s rich array of influences.

Although the fantasy film will differ from her more grounded works like Lady Bird and Little Women, Gerwig has shared her enthusiasm, saying:

“It’s connected to the folklore and fairy stories of England, but it’s a combination of different traditions. As a child, you accept the whole thing—that you’re in this land of Narnia, there’s fauns, and then Father Christmas shows up.

It doesn’t even occur to you that it’s not schematic. I’m interested in embracing the paradox of the worlds that Lewis created, because that’s what’s so compelling about them.”

Actor Jason Isaacs has suggested that Gerwig might be adapting The Magician’s Nephew, which serves as a prequel to C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe books. Isaacs revealed, “I loved all the Narnia books as a kid.

When Peter was told he wouldn’t be coming back, I understood something devastating about mortality.

I picked this one because Greta Gerwig is about to make a film of it, which I can’t wait to see.” No casting announcements or key talents have been revealed for the project yet.

Gerwig’s The Chronicles of Narnia will be released in theaters on Thanksgiving 2026 and then hit Netflix later that Christmas.
