Tom Green is opening up about his decision to return to his home country of Canada after spending two decades living in the Hollywood Hills.
The star of The Tom Green Show, now 53, reflected on his choice to leave Los Angeles in 2021 during a recent interview while promoting This Is the Tom Green Documentary, now available on Amazon Prime Video.
“I’m not really a Hollywood guy,” Green admitted. “I started to feel like I wasn’t being true to my authentic self.”
His longtime collaborator and co-star on The Tom Green Show, Glenn Humplik, emphasized how significant this realization was for Green. Speaking with the outlet in a phone interview, Humplik described Green as often being “reserved,” “serious,” and “analytical about every single comedy bit and thing that he does.”
This introspective side of Green is highlighted in his documentary, which captures his journey to fame and his life on a sprawling 150-acre farm in rural Ontario. There, he resides among a variety of animals, including chickens, a mule, a donkey, and more.
What Tom Green Has Been Up to Since His Divorce from Drew Barrymore
Discussing his portrayal in the documentary, Green acknowledged that audiences might be surprised by the version of himself they see on screen.
“People are probably going to be surprised that I’m not, like, completely crazy,” he said, adding that viewers will gain insight into what matters most to him.
“There’s a sort of wholesome, heartwarming aspect to this—the fact that I have a close relationship with my family, that I love animals, and that I take pleasure in activities many people around the world enjoy, like exploring the woods,” he explained.
Green’s rural life also includes quality time with his new fiancée, Amanda Nelson. A fellow Ontario native, Nelson reconnected with Green after he moved back home. Their relationship blossomed, leading to Green proposing in December.
Despite his retreat into a quieter, more rural existence, Green remains active in his career. He is set to embark on a U.S. tour, where he will perform stand-up comedy as well as music from his new country album, Home to the Country.

While Green has distanced himself from big cities and modern technology, he continues to reflect on the evolving nature of urban life. He speculated that in 50 to 100 years, “cities may no longer be as relevant.”
“People may start to realize that there’s a lot of space,” he told. “We’re all connected now electronically, so we don’t need to be all sitting on top of each other.”
Looking ahead, Green intends to spend more time exploring remote desert regions in Texas, New Mexico, and other parts of the U.S.
