The Yellowstone spinoffs continue to expand, leaving fans wondering who might be the next character to get their own series.
CBS is in the early stages of developing a procedural series featuring Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton. While plot details remain undisclosed, the outlet reports that no official deals have been made yet.
Premiering on Paramount in 2018, Yellowstone followed the fictional Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in Montana.
While Kevin Costner’s portrayal of patriarch John Dutton initially captivated audiences, the series also thrived due to the performances of Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Gil Birmingham, Cole Hauser, and Kelsey Asbille. Their compelling portrayals kept fans engaged for five seasons—along with the offscreen controversies.
The show’s final season faced multiple delays and speculation regarding Costner’s departure, which was confirmed in 2023. In the season 5B premiere, John Dutton was written out, falling victim to a scheme orchestrated by Jamie (Bentley) and Sarah (Dawn Olivieri).
Costner, 70, has previously refuted claims that he left Yellowstone due to a dispute with creator Taylor Sheridan. “I have taken a beating from those f—– guys and I know a lot of times where it’s coming from,” he told in May 2024.
“I just elected not to get into that. But if you know me well enough, I made Yellowstone the first priority, and to insinuate anything else would be wrong. I did not initiate any of those things. They did.”
He elaborated further, stating, “I left exactly when they wanted, and it made it hard on me. It turns out they didn’t have the scripts for 5B.
They needed four more days just to complete the first eight episodes. I left early to give them what they needed to have a complete eight, and I felt bad that the audience didn’t get 10.”
Despite Costner’s exit, several of his former castmates have expressed interest in revisiting their characters. Reilly, 47, and Hauser, 50, have been approached for a spinoff focused on Beth and Rip’s journey.
“I loved this season. There were some really different territories to explore, so I’m not clinging to her,” Reilly shared with Town and Country in November 2024. “I’m happy to put her back in her padlocked box.”
However, Reilly also hinted at her continued curiosity about Beth’s evolution, adding, “I am definitely interested in Beth, and who she is after some things have happened. Who is she in peace? As an actor you’re like, ‘Ooh, let me at that.’ Wouldn’t it be fun to watch Beth go to therapy?”
Before Yellowstone concluded, ViacomCBS president Chris McCarthy confirmed that a new spinoff starring Matthew McConaughey was in development.
A year later, however, the McConaughey-led project appeared to be shelved and replaced by another spinoff titled The Madison.
The Madison stars Michelle Pfeiffer alongside Patrick J. Adams, Kurt Russell, and Beau Garrett. Unlike previous prequels 1923 and 1883, The Madison marks the first Yellowstone spinoff set in the present day.
