Priyanka Chopra recently talked about the gender pay gap and opened up about getting equal pay as her male co-star in her long 23 years of career. The female stars not getting equal pay or amount around that number is a long-standing problem in the entertainment industry and beyond. The gender pay gap is not just a statistic but a symptom of a larger societal problem.
As evident as any social problem, women still face significant challenges and barriers to achieving economic parity with men. Priyanka Chopra Jonas has been seen talking openly and boldly about the persisting gender pay gap problem for over a long time and that female stars are paid a minimal amount as compared to hefty sums charged by male stars.
During the promotions of her new spy thriller series ”Citadel,” the actress shared her joy and happiness on finally getting equal pay. She says, “Thank God after 23 years. Yet I do believe and I have briefly discussed this with Jennifer Salke, the head of Citadel and TV for Amazon Prime and also the creator of Citadel.

‘She arrived here five years ago, intending to create this global universe. Would this dialogue have been different if the studio’s boss had not been a woman? Would there have been a talk with her because there wasn’t one? They(the team) went back and insisted that they be paid equally because they were playing co-leads. Priyanka opens up.
Chopra Jonas emphasized the fact that she didn’t believe equal pay was even conceivable saying: ‘my critical self was like, no, it’s never going to happen.” She told her agents, ‘You can ask for it, but guys, I have done this for a long time.’
Priyanka Chopra Jonas further expresses that after doing Citadel, whatever work she did as co-lead, she got the pay parity. And Citadel did play in her favor, Chopra Jonas shares. “Women must participate in decision-making events since it affects the lives of other women. After Citadel, I received parity on every project I co-led. Therefore it did change my life”, Chopra adds.

It is not only Priyanka Chopra that’s opening up about the gender pay gap; several other female stars are talking about this issue. “Grey’s Anatomy” star Ellen Pompeo said to Variety in 2019 that she nearly left the program after knowing that Patrick Dempsey, her co-star, was earning almost twice as much as she did at the beginning of the show.
Chopra Jonal, while talking to BBC 100 Women, referred to instances in the Bollywood industry where she used to be paid 10% of what her male co-stars earned. The gender pay gap is a very pressing concern existing today, and Priyanka took the first step to bridge this gap. Let’s hope we see this gap getting filled very soon.
