Ben Affleck recently gave fans a glimpse of his upcoming action-packed thriller RIP, which reunites him with longtime collaborator Matt Damon.
The 52-year-old actor appeared onstage at the 2025 Next on Netflix Special Presentation in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Jan. 29, where he introduced the audience to the first trailer for the highly anticipated crime thriller, directed by Joe Carnahan.
Inspired by true events, RIP also features a star-studded cast that includes Teyana Taylor, Steven Yeun, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino, Néstor Carbonell, and Kyle Chandler.
At the event, Affleck shared a brief insight into the film’s premise, saying, “This movie takes a look at the things people will do for money.” He went on to describe RIP as a thrilling mix of Heat, Narc, and Training Day.
Affleck, who produced the movie alongside Damon through their company Artists Equity, referred to it as a “really fun, engaging ride that keeps you guessing.” He added, “It’s a compelling, complicated human drama that also incorporates elements of cinema that people have loved forever.”
He went on to highlight the significance of the film for both him and Damon, saying, “It’s the seventh movie that Matt Damon and my company, Artists Equity, has made, and it really is in a lot of ways the most important for us because we’ve found some really exciting partners who are really interested in not just what has been but what could be at Netflix.” Affleck continued, “… This is exactly the kind of film that we want to champion.”
For those unfamiliar, RIP follows the unraveling trust among a team of Miami cops who discover millions of dollars in cash in a dilapidated stash house. As outside forces catch wind of the massive discovery, the team is forced to question their loyalty to one another and whom they can truly rely on.
Affleck and Damon, who grew up together in Boston, have had a decades-long career in Hollywood. The duo famously won an Oscar for writing the 1997 film Good Will Hunting, in which they also starred, before embarking on successful solo careers.
In a November interview, Affleck and Damon discussed the inspiration behind starting their own production company.
Damon explained, “I was like, what are we doing, man? Both of us, this is what we love to do more than anything. The only thing better is doing it together, in any capacity, whether he’s directing or whether we’re acting together or whether we’re producing together, or whether we’re just facilitating for other filmmakers.”
He added, “How much life do we have left and what are we going to do with it?”
RIP will be available for streaming on Netflix in 2025.
