Chris Pine seems to be in the dark when it comes to “The Princess Diaries 3,” which recently confirmed is officially in development at Disney.
The “Star Trek” star made his film debut in the 2004 sequel, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” portraying Nicholas, the slow-burning love interest of Anne Hathaway’s character, Mia Thermopolis.
Since the film ended with the two characters as a couple, it raises the question of whether Pine will return for the third installment or if the story will have to explain Nicholas’ absence.
“I don’t know anything,” Pine admitted during an appearance on “Today With Hoda & Jenna” when asked about the upcoming sequel. “Call Disney! Call Bob Iger!”
“Today” co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager were surprised that Pine had no information about the film. “You don’t know anything?” Hager asked.
Pine responded, “The answer is I’ve gotta see. I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic.”
Development of “The Princess Diaries 3” is moving forward with Adele Lim, the screenwriter of “Crazy Rich Asians” and the director of “Joyride,” set to helm the project. Flora Greeson is writing the script.
Although specific plot details have yet to be confirmed, the film is expected to continue the story from the 2001 original, “The Princess Diaries,” and its 2004 sequel, rather than rebooting the series.
“As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim said in a statement.
“We look forward to celebrating its core tenets of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
Plans for “The Princess Diaries 3” have been brewing since 2022.
Anne Hathaway shared an update last year in an interview with V Magazine, saying: “We’re in a good place. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
