Diane Abbott has expressed alarm over purported remarks by a prominent Conservative donor, claiming they stirred sentiments of hatred towards black women and included a suggestion of violence directed at her.
As Britain’s most tenured black MP, Abbott underscored the gravity of such discourse, especially in the wake of recent fatal attacks on parliamentarians.
The comments attributed to Frank Hester reportedly date back to a 2019 gathering, as reported.
Hester has issued an apology for what he termed as “rude” remarks directed at Abbott. He clarified that his comments were not motivated by her gender or race.
Abbott’s response highlights concerns over racially charged and threatening rhetoric in political discourse.
A Downing Street spokesperson labeled Mr. Hester’s purported remarks as “unacceptable,” refraining from elaborating on the specific reasons behind the statement.
Meanwhile, Labour Party Chair Anneliese Dodds unequivocally condemned the alleged comments as racist and sexist.
In a statement on Tuesday, Ms Abbott said as a “single woman” she was already “vulnerable” when walking or taking a bus in her Hackney constituency.
“For all of my career as an MP I have thought it important, not to live in a bubble, but to mix and mingle with ordinary people,” she added.
“The fact that two MPs have been murdered in recent years makes talk like this all the more alarming.”
Despite being suspended from her duties as a Labour MP, Ms. Abbott expressed her hope for public support from Keir Starmer following Mr. Hester’s comments.
The Labour Party withdrew the whip from Abbott last year after her remarks suggesting Irish, Jewish, and Traveller individuals hadn’t faced lifelong racism.
Abbott retracted her statement and apologized for any distress caused. Labour leader Sir Keir described Mr. Hester’s alleged comments as “abhorrent” during an appearance on ITV’s Lorraine program.
“And Diane has been a trailblazer, she has paved the way for others, she’s probably faced more abuse than any other politician over the years on a sustained basis,” he added.
