Haiti’s new interim prime minister, Garry Conille, is in stable condition after being hospitalized for an unspecified illness on Saturday afternoon, his office announced.
Conille, 58, who assumed office just over a week ago, was taken to the hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties, according to local media reports. However, his office did not disclose the cause of his hospitalization.
“After a week of intense activities, the Prime Minister … experienced a slight illness on the afternoon of Saturday, June 8, 2024, and went to the hospital for treatment,” his office said in a statement. “His condition is stable at the moment,” it added.
Visuals showed several ambulances and police officers outside a hospital in a suburb of the capital, Port-au-Prince, where Conille was reportedly receiving treatment.
Conille briefly led the country over a decade ago and was most recently a former regional director at UNICEF.
He was appointed interim prime minister on May 29 by a transition council tasked with restoring stability and reclaiming control from violent gangs.
The council’s mandate includes organizing elections before February 7, 2026, as stipulated in Haiti’s constitution, following a series of leadership crises.
In 2021, President Jovenel Moise was assassinated, leaving Haiti without a president to this day.
Additionally, Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned in March this year after leaving the country to seek support for the Kenyan security mission and being unable to return.
