James Gunn is setting the record straight regarding David Corenswet’s appearance in the latest trailer for his Superman movie.
The 58-year-old filmmaker took to Threads on Monday, January 27, to address a fan’s claim that computer-generated imagery had been used to alter Corenswet’s face in the final moments of a Superman teaser that aired on television the previous day.
Fans began speculating about potential CGI enhancements after watching the clip, with one Threads user commenting on Gunn’s post, stating, “There’s plenty of time to refine the CG.”
In response, Gunn shut down the speculation, writing, “There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide-angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real, as is David.”
The latest Superman spot offers fans a fresh look at Corenswet, 31, as Clark Kent/Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor in the upcoming reboot.
The film’s star-studded cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern.
At a special preview event for Superman’s first trailer release in December—Gunn and Corenswet shared details about the film’s approach.
While it won’t serve as an origin story, it will explore Clark Kent’s early years as a reporter for The Daily Planet. Gunn also recalled his surprise when both Corenswet and Brosnahan submitted their audition tapes on the very first day of casting.
“The thing that I was the most worried about was casting Superman at the beginning of this process,” Gunn revealed at the event. “And after the first day, I was like, ‘Oh, I think that guy’s pretty good.’”
Beyond Superman, Gunn is actively building out his newly established DC Universe.
On January 23, the director confirmed that DC Studios and filmmaker Craig Gillespie had officially begun production on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with Milly Alcock set to portray the titular superhero.
Jason Momoa also recently confirmed that he will appear in the film as the fan-favorite character Lobo. Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11.
