Somewhere in cinema heaven, Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) is fuming. Why, you ask? Because yet another funny guy has secured the deal and won the girl.
It was revealed that Joel McHale, the comedic actor, will join Scream 7 as Sidney Prescott’s husband, played by Neve Campbell.
But wait, it gets even stranger. If, like everyone else, you assumed Patrick Dempsey would return in Scream 7 to reprise his role as Detective Mark Kincaid from the third film, you were right… but also dead wrong.
Back in 2022, it was hinted that Sidney’s husband would be named “Mark,” leading many fans to believe that Sidney had finally found love after the events of the 2000 Wes Craven-directed film.
However, here’s where things take a bizarre turn: McHale’s character is, in fact, named Mark—but his name is Mark Evans, not Kincaid.
Before we completely lose faith in this latest installment, let’s remember that it’s being directed by franchise creator Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first Scream based on the true-life crimes of the infamous psychopath Danny Rollin, also known as the Gainesville Ripper.
We’ve trusted Williamson in the past—well, we did, until the current shock, betrayal, and sorrow we feel over losing our beloved McDreamy.
Although we don’t yet know many specifics about McHale’s character, we admit we need some time to digest this unexpected development. It definitely feels like we’re in the “you’re not my dad!” phase of grief.
Who Else Stars in Scream 7?
Speaking of dads, it’s safe to assume McHale’s Mark Evans is the father of Isabel May’s character, who is revealed to be the daughter of Sidney Prescott’s final girl—though we’re going to need a paternity test to confirm that one.
The ensemble cast of familiar and new faces, now filming in Atlanta, Georgia, includes Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, Anna Camp, Celeste O’Connor, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rchner, and Asa Germann.
As we try to compose ourselves and mourn the lost opportunity of seeing Patrick Dempsey’s Mark Kincaid back in action, we can’t help but think of Dempsey, who just a few months ago expressed his enthusiasm for a potential return to the franchise.
So, to the dreamiest detective to ever investigate: goodbye, goodbye, goodbye—you were bigger than the whole sky. The previous two Scream films are currently streaming on Paramount+.
