Romy and Michele are officially returning for another businesswoman special.
Mira Sorvino confirmed that the long-anticipated sequel to the 1997 comedy Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, which she starred in alongside Lisa Kudrow, is officially in development at 20th Century Studios.
Robin Schiff, who wrote the original film, is set to return to pen the screenplay for the sequel, which will be directed by Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series). Filming is expected to begin in June, with several locations around Los Angeles being considered.
Sorvino shared the exciting news on Instagram on Wednesday, confirming that she will reprise her role as Romy White, with Kudrow returning as Michele Weinberger. Both Sorvino and Kudrow will also serve as executive producers. In her post, Sorvino wrote, “We’re pretty excited about it.”
“Michele, this is definitely the cutest we’ve ever looked!” Sorvino, 57, added in a comment, referencing one of the most memorable lines from the original film.
While Sorvino did not specify which other cast members from the first Romy and Michele movie might appear in the sequel, she did tag several of her former co-stars, including Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim, Elaine Hendrix, Kristin Bauer, and Mia Cottet, as well as Schiff and Federle, 44.
In a November 2024 interview, Sorvino teased that the project was “so close to being green-lit,” revealing that a director had already been hired. She also mentioned that the deals for her and Kudrow, both as executive producers, had been finalized.
“They’ve done his deal, they’ve done Lisa [Kudrow] and my deals as executive producers,” the Academy Award-winning actress explained. “Robin has written multiple drafts of an amazing, funny script, which checks all the boxes for all the fans.”
Sorvino added, “And they’re just going back and forth, tweaking things here and there, and [there are] rumors of shooting it second quarter next year,” confirming that she and Kudrow, 61, would reprise their roles.
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, directed by David Mirkin, centers on two ditzy but well-meaning friends (Sorvino as Romy and Kudrow as Michele) who return to their high school in Tucson, Arizona, for their 10-year reunion with the hope of impressing their former bullies.
In February 2023, Cumming, 60, who played the nerd-turned-billionaire Sandy Frink, told he would be “totally game” to reprise his role in the sequel if the opportunity arose.
“I thought it was great. I mean, there’s been speculation about it and rumors about it having a sequel for the last 25 years, I have to say,” said the Traitors host. “But yeah, totally. I’d be absolutely game.”
