Let’s look at what “Ship” is all about
“The Ship” is a remarkable musical endeavor of Brian Eno featuring a monumental 21-minute title track inspired by the tragic event of the Titanic. Eno explained at an event, ‘The album “The Ship” is an unusual piece in that it employs vocals but doesn’t necessarily adhere to conventional song structure. It creates an atmospheric landscape, with intermittent characters drifting through its ethereal space, lost amidst the music. There is a subtle wartime backdrop, an inevitable sense of destiny, and a grand scale that lends itself to orchestration and the collaborative efforts of many individuals working in unison.’
Conveying the material on The Ship in a live setting, Eno has enlisted a Baltic Sea Philharmonic as his esteemed backing orchestra for his tour. Eno explained his choice stating, ‘I sought an orchestra that would interpret music as I would have envisioned it; with heartfelt emotion rather than solely relying on the score. I desired young, vibrant, and enthusiastic musicians. When I first met with the Baltic Sea Philharmonic, I discovered all of that and, to my delight, realized that they were named after a sea. That sealed the deal!’

Kristjan Järvi, the conductor who is orchestrating these performances, emphasized the pivotal role of freedom of expression in this presentation. Each individual involved is of equal importance, with no one being replaceable or expendable. The collaboration between Brian Eno and the orchestra transcends the traditional notion of an orchestra as mere executors of performance; instead, they form a cohesive unit where the orchestra itself becomes the embodiment of the performance, blurring the boundaries between band and orchestra.
